Manufacturing Methods

Custom Cut Gaskets and custom cut PTFE

Depending on the part being produced, there are a number of ways that one can approach the production of a cut gasket or cut component. Common cutting methods include CNC Knife Cutting, CNC Laser Cutting, CNC Water Jet Cutting, or Flat Bed Die Cutting. Availability of specific cutting methods may vary depending on the material being cut.

CNC Knife Cutting: CNC Knife Cutting is a common manufacturing method for cutting thin, soft materials like elastomers, textiles, papers, and thin plastics. A high precision CNC machine is equipped with a specialty knife tool. This knife tool is allowed to move along the path configured by the operator, precisely slicing through the material in question without transferring any additional heat or liquid onto the final product. Not only is CNC Knife Cutting quick and low cost, but it also helps avoid thermal or water damage with delicate materials. Unfortunately, due to the geometry of the blade, CNC Knife Cutting is less effective with thicker materials and can perform less effectively on smaller details and corners.

Laser Cutting Gaskets

CNC Laser Cutting: CNC Laser Cutting is a common manufacturing method for cutting thicker materials where thermal degradation is not a concern. A high precision CNC machine is equipped with a laser cutter (CO2 lasers, Nd Lasers, and YAG lasers are common). The laser is then allowed to follow the tool path configured by the operator, precisely vaporizing the material in the lasers path. CNC Laser Cutting can be used on most metals, plastics, rubbers, and wood. Most CNC Laser Cutting processes are limited to materials that are under 4 inches thick. Unfortunately, thicker materials must be exposed to the cutting laser for longer periods of time, potentially causing more thermal degradation and looser tolerances at the edges. Special focus on thickness, material, tolerances, and purpose must all be taken into account when using CNC Laser Cutting.

CNC Waterjet Cutting: Similar to CNC Laser Cutting, CNC Waterjet Cutting is a common method for cutting thicker materials. A high precision CNC machine is equipped with a abrasive waterjet cutter. The waterjet cutter is then allowed to follow the tool path configured by the operator, precisely cutting the material in the waterjets path. CNC Waterjet Cutting can be used on all materials: metals, plastics, rubbers, wood, and any exotic material (although some caution should be used with materials that are prone to water damage). Most CNC Waterjet Cutting processes are limited to materials that are under 12 inches thick, with tolerances becoming looser the thicker the material is.
