Neoprene (CR) Selection Guide
Chloroprene was the first synthetic rubber, and was developed commercially under the name Neoprene®. Chloroprene rubbers, O-rings, gaskets, & custom molded parts contain Chlorine in the polymer to reduce the reactivity to many oxidizing agents, as well as to oil and flame. The materials, O-rings, gaskets, & custom molded parts exhibit generally good ozone, aging, and chemical resistance. Chloroprene O-rings, gaskets, & custom molded parts also have relatively high tensile strength, as well as good abrasion and tear resistance. Chloroprene compounds, O-rings, gaskets, & custom molded parts are suitable for use in heating and air conditioning systems (HVAC), refrigeration units and numerous dynamic applications.
Canyon Component’s knowledgeable staff of consultants and application engineers takes pride in helping our customers find the perfect material, O-rings, gaskets, & custom molded parts to match their sealing needs. Contact us today for a quick and accurate product recommendation!
Common names include: CR (Chloroprene), Trade Names: Neoprene®
Features of Neoprene
- Relative low cost of O-rings, gaskets, & custom molded parts.
- Chloroprene O-rings, gaskets, & custom molded parts have excellent resistance to water and water solvents at low temperatures, ammonia, carbon dioxide.
- Chloroprene O-rings, gaskets, & custom molded parts have excellent resistance to ozone, weathering and aging.
- Chloroprene O-rings, gaskets, & custom molded parts are compatible with paraffin base mineral oil with low DPI, e.g. ASTM oil No. 1, silicone oil and grease.
- Chloroprene O-rings, gaskets, & custom molded parts are compatible with many commercial refrigerants.
- Chloroprene O-rings, gaskets, & custom molded parts are available in multiple compounds to meet performance and cost requirements.
Limitations of Neoprene
- Chloroprene O-rings, gaskets, & custom molded parts have poor resistance to aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene), chlorinated hydrocarbons (trichloroethylene)
- Chloroprene O-rings, gaskets, & custom molded parts have poor resistance to polar solvents, ketones, esters, ethers, acetones
- Chloroprene O-rings, gaskets, & custom molded parts have a Service Temperature Range of (varies with application): -65°F to 250°F (-54°C to 121°C)
