Methanol, also known as wood alcohol, is a colorless, volatile liquid with the chemical formula CH₃OH, used in various industrial and chemical applications. It is primarily employed as a solvent, antifreeze, and fuel, as well as a feedstock in the production of formaldehyde, acetic acid, and other chemicals. Methanol is also used in the manufacture of biodiesel and as a denaturant for ethanol. Despite its utility, methanol is highly toxic and poses significant health risks if ingested, inhaled, or absorbed through the skin. Proper handling, storage, and stringent safety measures, including the use of personal protective equipment, are essential to minimize risks and ensure safe usage.
