Pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) is a powerful explosive with the chemical formula C5H8N4O12, used primarily in military and industrial applications. It is a white crystalline solid that is highly sensitive to shock and friction, making it one of the most powerful high explosives. PETN is used in the manufacture of detonators, booster charges, and plastic explosives. Due to its sensitivity and explosive nature, handling requires strict safety measures, including protective clothing and equipment, to prevent accidental detonation. PETN is also used in the treatment of certain cardiovascular conditions as a vasodilator.
