PHOSPHINE Chemical compatibility with O-rings, rubbers, & plastics
Phosphine (PH3) is a colorless, flammable, and highly toxic gas with a fishy odor. It is used in the semiconductor industry, as a fumigant in agriculture, and in the production of organophosphorus compounds. Phosphine is spontaneously flammable in air and reacts violently with oxidizers. It poses significant health risks, including respiratory and neurological damage, and can be fatal if inhaled. Symptoms of exposure include coughing, chest tightness, dizziness, and nausea. Chronic exposure may lead to lung damage and other severe health effects. Handling phosphine requires strict safety protocols, including the use of gas detectors, proper ventilation, and personal protective equipment such as respirators. In case of a phosphine release, evacuation and emergency response procedures must be promptly implemented. Phosphine cylinders should be stored in cool, dry, and well-ventilated areas, away from sources of ignition and incompatible materials.
