PROPYL ACETONE Chemical compatibility with O-rings, rubbers, & plastics
Propyl acetone, also known as 2-butanone or methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) with the formula C4H8O, is a colorless solvent with a sharp, sweet odor widely used in coatings, adhesives, cleaning agents, and printing inks. It is also used in the manufacture of synthetic resins, rubber, and plastics due to its strong solvency and fast evaporation rate. In equipment where it contacts O-rings, rubber seals, gaskets, and plastic components, compatibility should be evaluated to prevent swelling or material degradation. Because MEK is highly flammable and may cause irritation, proper storage, ventilation, handling procedures, and appropriate PPE are recommended.
