ACETYLENE TETRACHLORIDE Chemical compatibility with O-rings, rubbers, & plastics
Acetylene tetrachloride, also known as tetrachloroethane, is a colorless, oily liquid with a chloroform-like odor, represented by the chemical formula C2H2Cl4. It is used primarily as a solvent for fats, oils, waxes, and resins and in the production of other chlorinated hydrocarbons. Acetylene tetrachloride is also employed as an intermediate in the synthesis of chemicals such as trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene. The compound is produced by the chlorination of acetylene or ethylene. It is highly toxic and can cause irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system upon exposure. Prolonged exposure may lead to more severe health effects, including liver and kidney damage. Proper handling and storage in a cool, well-ventilated area away from sources of ignition are essential to ensure safety. Personal protective equipment (PPE) should be used to prevent exposure. Always refer to the material safety data sheet (MSDS) for detailed safety and handling instructions.
