ACETYLENE TETRABROMIDE Chemical compatibility with O-rings, rubbers, & plastics
Acetylene tetrabromide, also known as tetrabromoethane, is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a high density and sweet odor, represented by the chemical formula C2H2Br4. It is used primarily as a solvent for fats, oils, and waxes and in the separation of minerals due to its high density. Acetylene tetrabromide is also employed as a reagent in organic synthesis and as a flame retardant. The compound is produced by the bromination of acetylene or ethylene. It is relatively non-toxic but can cause irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system upon exposure. Proper handling and storage in a cool, well-ventilated area away from sources of ignition are essential to ensure safety. Personal protective equipment (PPE) should be used to prevent exposure. Always refer to the material safety data sheet (MSDS) for detailed safety and handling instructions.
