ACETOPHENONE Chemical compatibility with O-rings, rubbers, & plastics
Acetophenone is an organic compound with the chemical formula C8H8O. It is a colorless, viscous liquid with a sweet, floral odor and is used primarily as a fragrance ingredient in perfumes and as a flavoring agent in food products. Acetophenone is also used in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, resins, and plastics. It serves as a precursor in the synthesis of various organic compounds, including styrene and alpha-methylstyrene. Industrially, acetophenone is produced by the Friedel-Crafts acylation of benzene with acetic anhydride. Although acetophenone is relatively non-toxic, it can cause irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system upon exposure. Proper handling and storage in a cool, well-ventilated area away from sources of ignition are essential to ensure safety. Personal protective equipment (PPE) should be used to prevent exposure. Always refer to the material safety data sheet (MSDS) for detailed safety and handling instructions.
