Alkyl lithium compounds are highly reactive organolithium reagents used in organic synthesis for the formation of carbon-carbon bonds. Examples include n-butyllithium and methyllithium. These compounds are pyrophoric, meaning they can ignite spontaneously upon exposure to air, and are highly reactive with water. Alkyl lithium compounds are used in the pharmaceutical and polymer industries. Proper handling requires strict safety protocols, including the use of inert atmosphere techniques and personal protective equipment (PPE).
