Malic acid is a white crystalline solid with the chemical formula C₄H₆O₅, used in various industrial, food, and pharmaceutical applications. It is a naturally occurring organic acid found in many fruits, particularly apples, and is commonly used as a flavor enhancer, acidulant, and pH adjuster in food and beverages. Malic acid is also employed in the production of cosmetics and as an intermediate in chemical synthesis. Despite its benefits, malic acid can cause skin and eye irritation if not handled properly.
