Mercuric chloride, also known as corrosive sublimate, is a white crystalline solid with the chemical formula HgCl₂, used in various industrial and chemical applications. It is primarily employed as a disinfectant and preservative, in the production of other mercury compounds, and in the treatment of wood to prevent decay. Mercuric chloride is also used in laboratory research and as a reagent in chemical synthesis. Despite its utility, mercuric chloride is highly toxic and poses significant health risks, including neurological damage and potential carcinogenic effects.
