Paraffins, or alkanes, are a class of hydrocarbons characterized by their saturated carbon-hydrogen bonds. They range from methane (C1) to longer chains such as hexadecane (C16) and beyond. Paraffins are found in natural gas, crude oil, and as components of waxes. They are used in a variety of applications, including fuels, lubricants, and in the manufacture of candles, cosmetics, and food packaging. Paraffins are valued for their stability, low reactivity, and clean-burning properties. They are also employed in chemical synthesis as feedstocks for producing other organic compounds.
