PHTHALIC ANHYDRIDE Chemical compatibility with O-rings, rubbers, & plastics
Phthalic anhydride (PA) is a white, crystalline solid with the chemical formula C8H4O3. It is primarily used as a precursor in the production of plasticizers, which are added to plastics to increase flexibility. PA is also a key intermediate in the manufacture of alkyd resins, unsaturated polyester resins, and dyes. It is produced by the oxidation of naphthalene or o-xylene. Phthalic anhydride is highly reactive and can cause severe skin and eye irritation upon contact. Inhalation of its dust or fumes can lead to respiratory irritation and, in severe cases, pulmonary edema. Proper handling includes the use of protective equipment such as gloves, goggles, and dust masks. It should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from incompatible materials like strong oxidizers and bases. Disposal should follow local regulations to prevent environmental contamination. Phthalic anhydride plays a crucial role in the production of high-performance industrial materials.
