ACETYLENE Chemical compatibility with O-rings, rubbers, & plastics

Acetylene is a colorless, highly flammable gas with a distinctive odor, represented by the chemical formula C2H2. It is widely used as a fuel and a chemical building block in various industrial applications. Acetylene is commonly used in oxy-acetylene welding and cutting, where it produces a high-temperature flame ideal for metalworking. It is also used in the synthesis of chemicals such as vinyl chloride, acrylic acid, and acetaldehyde. Acetylene is produced by the reaction of calcium carbide with water or by the partial oxidation of methane. Due to its high flammability and potential for explosive decomposition, acetylene must be handled with extreme care. Proper storage in specialized cylinders and adherence to safety guidelines are essential to prevent accidents. Personal protective equipment (PPE) and proper ventilation are crucial when working with acetylene. Always refer to the material safety data sheet (MSDS) for detailed safety and handling instructions.
