ACRYLONITRILE Chemical compatibility with O-rings, rubbers, & plastics

Acrylonitrile is a colorless, volatile liquid with a pungent odor, represented by the chemical formula C3H3N. It is primarily used in the production of polyacrylonitrile, which is a precursor for synthetic fibers, such as acrylic and modacrylic fibers. Acrylonitrile is also used in the manufacture of plastics, adhesives, and elastomers. Due to its high toxicity, acrylonitrile can cause severe health effects upon inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact. It is classified as a potential carcinogen, making proper handling and safety precautions, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and proper ventilation, essential to prevent exposure.
