Aluminum chloride is a white to yellowish solid with the chemical formula AlCl3. It is widely used as a catalyst in organic synthesis, particularly in the Friedel-Crafts reaction to produce alkylated and acylated aromatic compounds. Aluminum chloride is also employed in the production of aluminum metal and as a reagent in various chemical processes. It is highly reactive and corrosive, posing risks of skin, eye, and respiratory irritation upon exposure. Proper handling, storage, and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) are essential to ensure safety.
