Barium sulfide is a white to grayish crystalline compound with the chemical formula BaS. It is used in the manufacture of luminous paints, fireworks, and certain chemicals. Barium sulfide can release hydrogen sulfide gas, which is highly toxic and flammable, posing significant health and safety risks. Proper handling, storage, and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) are essential to ensure safety when working with barium sulfide.
