n-Heptane, often referred to simply as heptane, is a straight-chain alkane with the formula C7H16. It is a colorless liquid with a gasoline-like odor, used extensively as a reference standard in octane rating tests for gasoline. n-Heptane's high volatility and non-polar nature make it an effective solvent in laboratories and industrial applications, including the formulation of adhesives, coatings, and chemical extraction processes. It is also used in the pharmaceutical industry for the recrystallization of drugs. Due to its flammable nature, proper storage and handling are essential to prevent fire hazards and health risks associated with inhalation.
