Fuming sulfuric acid, or oleum, is a potent chemical consisting of sulfur trioxide dissolved in sulfuric acid. It appears as a dense, oily liquid and is highly corrosive. Oleum is primarily used in the manufacture of sulfuric acid, sulfonation reactions, and the production of detergents, dyes, and pharmaceuticals. Due to its reactive nature, it can cause severe burns and respiratory issues upon exposure. Handling requires specialized equipment and protective measures. Oleum is also used in the petroleum industry for refining processes. Its transport and storage are regulated to ensure safety and prevent environmental hazards.
