Wood alcohol, also known as methanol, is the simplest form of alcohol with the chemical formula CH₃OH. It is a colorless, volatile liquid with a slightly sweet odor. Methanol is used primarily as an industrial solvent and antifreeze, as well as a feedstock for the production of chemicals such as formaldehyde and acetic acid. It is also utilized as a fuel and fuel additive. Methanol is toxic and can cause blindness or death if ingested. Due to its high toxicity, it is used in denaturing ethanol to prevent recreational consumption.
